Grout types
Grout can be sanded or not. Choose the right grout to withstand the width of the joints between the tiles and hence the repair site.
Measure the distance between the tiles. If the space is greater than 1/8 ", use ground mortar. If the width is 1/8" or less, use unpolished mortar.
Never use grout on metal, glass or marble tiles. The sand will scratch the surface. Use unpolished grout instead.
Acrylic latex grout is relatively easy to make, but needs to be sealed. Epoxy grout is very stain resistant and does not require sealing, but is more difficult to use. Find out more about choosing a mortar and mortar.
Important Preliminary Design Tips
Make sure the tiles next to the cracked grout are not tampered with or moved when pressure is applied to them. In most cases, a cracked grout is simply broken grout. But chances are that the cracked grout was caused by tiles that rose from underneath.
So make sure you see the adjacent tiles to make sure none of them are tampered with. If you need them, you'll want to get rid of the tile and re-read it at the bottom.
Try the right paint pattern
Mix the appropriate paint (you can match the color of the tiles in the paint store) with the tile filler and apply it to the crack with a cotton ball. Allow the putty to dry for a few seconds and then gently wipe it with a damp cloth. When you're done, the crack will be much less noticeable.
ProTip
If there are chips or stains on the joint, remove them. You will need a solution remover for this task. After removing the old grout, install a new one and caulk it to soften future stains and damage.
Try replacing a single board
If the board is too damaged to be repaired, you will have to throw it away and replace it. Start by placing a rag on the damaged tile and then smash it with a hammer.
Tiles chipped with a chisel and removed from the old adhesive with a spatula. Clean the edges of the remaining tiles to remove any dust and debris that may be caught when replacing the tiles. Using a notched trowel, apply glue to the back of the tile to be replaced and hold it in place.
Allow the glue to dry for the time recommended by the manufacturer, then fill the joints with the grout of the impression tubes for minor repairs. After the grout is dry, wipe the tile with a damp cloth or sponge.
